HEADLINE: Walsh Western International
High tech companies miss out on potential revenue
through poor reverse logistics
BODY:
Up to 50 per cent of consumer electronics
products returned require little more than repackaging
and relabelling before being remarketed and resold,
according to Walsh Western International (WWI),
a specialist in the management and distribution
of high value goods. As returned items depreciate
in value by one per cent each day, with up to eight
per cent of goods being returned, companies that
fail to deal with returns quickly and efficiently
can severely affect turnover and profits.
WWI has unveiled its Reverse Logistics solutions
today to help companies combat the problem by speeding
up the returns cycle. WWI Reverse Logistics is a
complete managed solution which collects, screens,
repackages and remarkets a company's returned goods
within the same timescale as the original fulfilment
cycle. By dealing with returns quickly and efficiently,
companies can avoid the common depreciation problem
which means that the cost of dealing with the returned
item is often more than its value.
WWI Reverse Logistics is a comprehensive range of
services which includes the collection of new product
returns from businesses or consumers, delivery to
a WWI warehouse, product screening and testing,
rekitting and recalibration as necessary, repackaging
and shipping to client brokers for resale.
These services are backed by WWI's Reverse Enterprise
Manager, a web-based account management software
tool which tracks the movement of product throughout
the returns cycle. The tool allows returns centre
teams to exchange detailed inventory management
data with other parties such as clients, planning
and marketing teams, product repair teams, third
party transporters, brokers, vendors and customers.
Reverse Enterprise Manager also provides comprehensive
tracking, auditing and reporting controls to enable
more accurate decision making.
Using the service, high tech companies can quarantine
damaged goods and ship them to the appropriate manufacturer
for repair or disposal in an environmentally sound
manner. They can also use WWI Reverse Logistics
to comply with EU legislation such as the WEEE Directive
on Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment
and the RoHS Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous
Substances. The collection, recycling and disposal
of large volumes of 'end of lease' or 'end of life'
products can be managed completely by WWI including
the provision of audit trails and certification.
"Although most companies see reverse logistics
as a headache, it actually represents a great opportunity
if it is handled quickly and efficiently,"
explains Phil Cocking, UK managing director of WWI.
"Failure to manage the returns area of a business
efficiently means high operating costs, lost revenue
potential and waste of valuable resources, which
can seriously affect a company's balance sheet.
By outsourcing the process to a specialist, companies
can concentrate on their core business whilst ensuring
that revenue flow is maximised and legal and social
obligations are met."
